To carry out clinical trials and research projects with the aim of assessing the clinical and biochemical response of the lachrymal function unit to therapeutics or contact lens wear under controlled environmental conditions.

CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT RESEARCH LABORATORY (CERLab)
During a conventional multicenter dry eye disease (DED) clinical trial, patients are daily exposed to variable temperature, relative humidity, draft and perform different visual tasks. Thus, the ocular surface of each participant is challenged differently, which is a major reason for failing to show statistically significant results in these therapeutic clinical trials.1 Environmental chambers are facilities where certain environmental conditions can be tightly controlled as well as visual tasks. They have been typically used to evaluate the response of an organism to a predetermined and controlled stimulus. DED signs and symptoms can be consistently exacerbated within the environmental chamber of the CERLab (IOBA, University of Valladolid, Spain); additionally, certain molecular biomarkers in tears or conjunctival cells are showing consistent up or down-regulation .2,3 Consequently, we are able to provide adequate facilities to reliably evaluate DED potential therapeutics.Additionally, contact lenses studies can be also performed in our facilities and we have already shown differences in tolerability in adverse environmental conditions.4
Our state-of-art facility and the expertise of our research team are suitable to customize clinical trial designs5 so that they can better show the efficacy of potential therapeutic candidates depending on each drug mechanism of action.
